Notes from the Growers

The Sour Moose F1 is one of the creations that our team at Dirty Bird Genetics was most proud of, and easily our favorite strain of 2025. The Sour Moose F2 is the next waypoint as we work our way toward our final destination, a Sour Moose IBL. In cannabis breeding, the F2 generation is notoriously diverse, and it typically contains more variance than any other generation. The quality and overall uniformity we found in the Sour Moose F2s is a testament to the genetics.

The original Sour Moose is a cross of Dirty Bird’s flagship Sour Lime Haze and Dynasty’s regional sativa superstar, Moose and Lobsta. To make the F2s, we selected our two favorite cuts from the F1 cohort and we crossed them together in hopes of extracting the best of both phenotypes.

The flower structure, morphology and overall yield on the Sour Moose F2 was remarkable. This will make an excellent choice for anyone prioritizing yield and terpenes, but be aware that these plants are vigorous and they can get tall, so you might consider flipping them earlier than average. Noticeably healthy and easy to grow, they have great vascularity, thick stalks, long stigmas, excellent stack, and they build flower very rapidly. Despite the weight and density of the flowers, no staking was required indoors because the plants were very sturdy and strong. We would recommend topping these plants 1-2 times prior to flower in order to maximize the number of colas you get. Lateral development is very strong regardless of how you train them, but taking a Sea of Green approach will only increase your production.

We observed some divergence in flower morphology with approximately 33% exhibiting a cone-shaped stature and granular bracts, 50% exhibiting a long spherical structure with dome-shaped tops, and one outlier pheno exhibiting round golf-ball flowers reminiscent of a classic kush. Indoors, about 50% of plants had purple hues present in the flowers by day 50-55, but overall, I would consider this strain to be green-dominant. Outdoors that could change. Floral initiation started early and continued on building at a rapid pace. By day 55 the trichomes were more-than sufficiently amber making the ideal harvest window somewhere around 55 days. Trichomes were approximately 50% gritty and 50% oily and they were notably plentiful, clustering and stacking on each other under the scope.

The terpenes in the Sour Moose F2 are some of the best and most consistent that we’ve ever encountered across a cultivar, and it has that old school taste that you just don’t see around anymore. It is the perfect marriage of the Sour Lime Haze’s citrus/lime profile and the Moose and Lobsta’s herbaceous pine/cilantro profile. In the final weeks of flower the terpenes began to diverge a little bit with sour and gas mixing into the sharp pine and citrus-lime that dominated the early weeks. We did have one outlier that smelled more foul than the others, which Ben described as “porto-potty dumpster.”  Upon testing these plants, we found that the level of Trans-b-ocimene present in the Sour Moose F2 was higher than in any other plant we’ve ever tested; it was the dominant terpene in most of the plants. Interestingly, Trans-b-ocimene also helps plants repel pests like spider mites and aphids, and it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. Myrcene, Pinene, and Limonene were the other highly prevalent terpenes.

Overall, if you love bright, sour, citrus, pine, gas terpenes and you love hardy, easy-to-maintain, vigorous plants with trichomes for days and astronomical yields, then you should probably check this strain out.
